All State Junior High Band Information
Dear Directors, Parents, and Students,
We are excited to announce the continuance of the Utah All-State Junior High Concert Band. This band will perform in conjunction with the Utah High School All-State Band. This concert will take place on Saturday January 19tth, 2019 in Abravanel Hall in downtown Salt Lake City.
Dr. Donald Peterson from Brigham Young University will be this year’s conductor of the Utah All-State Junior High Band. Student selection will be based on the following:
• Involved students must be currently enrolled in a junior high or middle school band program or qualify for an official exemption if their main source of education does not offer an ensemble for the student’s musical discipline.
• Directors will be contacted to ensure that selected students are eligible to participate.
• Students must commit to both days rehearsal as well as the performance. January 18th, from 9am – 5pm at Lakeridge Junior High in Orem, Utah will be the location for the all day rehearsal. The band will also rehearse January 19th, the day of the concert with a light rehearsal / sound check at Abravanel Hall before the concert. Audition Information:
• A $10 Application/audition fee will be paid online when your audition is submitted.
• The video audition is due by 11:59 pm on October 30th, 2018. Late auditions will not be accepted. Please plan ahead and even submit a day ahead to avoid possible glitches.
• Click on the link (UMEA All-State Junior High Band audition music) to find your specific instrument and the music that will be required for your video audition.
• Brass and Woodwind students will all played the following.
1. A 2 octave major scale ascending and descending at quarter note =’s 120
2. A 2 octave major scale ascending and descending at quarter note =’s 120
3. Technical etude as listed on your instrument specific page. (clarity and tone is more important that speed)
• Results will be announced after All-State High School Band and Orchestra selections have been made to allow for any 9th grade student that is possibly auditioning and qualifying for the high school group. Acceptance: • Selected students will pay a $70 participation fee.
• Students will receive an All-State Junior High Band t-shirt.
• Selected students must provide their own transportation to and from the rehearsal and performance sights for both days. Participating students will have an opportunity to learn from an outstanding music educator as well as practice and perform a concert with the best of the best in the state of Utah.
